Special Effect Contact Lenses

Types of Contact Lenses

There are different material types you can choose from when buying contact lenses; soft, hard and Rigid Gas Permeable. Each type is made for the different needs of the consumer. Hard contact lenses were the first type on the market although they are seldomly used anymore. Today, soft contact lenses have become the more popular choice.

Soft Contact Lenses
This type of contact lens lasts about a year before they should be replaced. They are usually easy to wear, and when cleaned properly should not cause any irritation to the eyes.

Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses
These are a little more expensive but last a lot longer. They have been known to last several years if cared for and cleaned properly. They are made of a material that allows more oxygen to permeate the lens making them more comfortable to wear than any other lens available.

Hard Contact Lenses
These although quite irritating to the eyes, are very durable and have a long life.

These days, people are looking for an easier solution to wearing contact lenses and companies have come up with products known as;

Frequent or planned replacement contact lenses (last one to several months).

Disposable contacts lenses (last from one day to two weeks).
Disposable contacts are the ultimate contact lens, designed to be worry free and the easiest to use. Simply put them in and discard them when you are finished wearing them.

Daily wear contact lenses are worn daily and then discarded at night before turning in.

Extended wear contacts are worn day and night for at least a week before they have to be discarded.

There are other special contact lenses available such as;

  • Bifocal contacts that provide two different prescriptions in each lens.
  • Colored contacts that simply enhance or change your eye color.
  • Ortho-k contacts are designed to help you see better even when you are not wearing them.
  • Special effect contact lenses are novelty items that can be used for costume parties, theatrical plays or just for fun. They come in many different styles such as blood red eyes, spiral eyes, dollar sign eyes and many more.
